Summary: | An investigation of problems of understanding in semiprofessional intercultural (doctor-patient) interaction. It is observed that divergent cultural expectations & background knowledge may cause a situation characterized by repeated mutual attempts to secure understanding & a simultaneous covert blocking of understanding on the patient's part. This situation, called antagonism, is argued to affect the discourse as a whole rather than being characterized as local communicative failure. A series of semiprofessional interactions between German doctors & non-German patients of varying ethnic & cultural background are examined, revealing numerous structural features characteristic of the antagonistic communicative constellation. 2 Diagrams, 39 References.
