Summary:Presented is a discussion of possible reasons for the unsatisfactory performance of Brazilian students in oral self-expression. Various contributory factors are enumerated, eg, the inhibiting tendencies of the mass media, the absence of high cultural level for many families, lack of academic emphasis on self-expression, fiscal restraints upon the schools, & the community influence.
