Summary: | If the word 'sociology' in the title was replaced by the word 'universal history,' the name of Friedrich Schiller's introductory lecture at the University of Jena on May 26, 1789 would have been recreated. The author asks readers to consider this a sign of his admiration, not arrogance, when he gives his account of sociology, social history, & living history in the past 50 years. The article is the author's farewell lecture in the faculty of social sciences at the University of Karlsruhe on February 14, 2007. Among other topics, the author talks about scholars that have been influential in his long career: 1) Hans Freyer who instilled in him the interest in emancipation & equality, & industrialization & scientification of all facets of life; 2) Helmut Schelsky whose 'Sociology of Sexuality' showed that individual behavior should not be considered abnormal or shameful - the first step in overcoming the declarations of the bourgeois, Catholic society, & 3) Johann Plenge who introduced the author to the works of Claude-Henri de Saint-Simon & the need for sociology during the radical changes from an agricultural to an industrial society.
