Summary:An introduction to this special journal issue on the impact of ergonomics in the field of industrial relations (see related abstracts in SA 44:3). The object of ergonomic study is examined, considering objectives & typical methodological approaches. Historically overlapping, industrial relations & ergonomics have emerged as complementary disciplines. While ergonomics started as a means to develop specific methods for integrating engineering, information science, & architecture, it now addresses broader issues such as work organization & interventions in social management. The shift to a focus on practical management problems for the field of industrial relations reflects interest in microorganizational processes within forms, especially workers' informal work activities. Areas of future collaboration between industrial relations & ergonomics are identified, centering on: the integration of different forms of participation; the close interaction of worker participation & work relations; the application of ergonomics to personnel management; & concurrent management of work reorganization projects. 1 Figure, 34 References.
