Summary:An examination of the performance in the last six years of two political parties opposing Mexico's primary party, the Institutional Revolutionary Party: the conservative National Action Party & the left-wing Mexican Socialist Party. Focus is on the new electoral law (Codigo Federal Electoral), the conservative Right electoral appeal, & changes in the Left. It is concluded that: (1) the Left must constitute a real electoral force if it means to compete for democratic pluralism; (2) the defense of democracy must be the main task of the opposition parties; & (3) in the transition to democracy, both the conservative & the left-wing parties must try to grow electorally so that they can present a challenge to the dominant party. 5 Tables.
