Summary:Approaching child abuse as a sociological issue, the purpose of this study is to consider the lifeworld of abused children & the psychological damage that can occur because of the stigmatization that can result from such abuse. Following a review of the literature, three cases of abuse are analyzed from the viewpoint of social interactionism. Oral life histories of abused children illustrate how stigmatization occurs & how the psychological damage is created, as well as how it might be reduced through interactions with others within the norm of family.
