Summary:The increasing shortage of water, which is not only due to climatic causes, means that this resource must be managed with socioeconomic criteria when it is used in activities of this nature; therefore, in this work, for the years 1996 and 2002 we have calculated the gross and net productivity per hectare and per cubic meter of water for the irrigation of the five hydrographical basins in which the territory of Andalusia is divided and the twenty-five current systems of exploitation of these resources; therefore, it is possible to carry out comparative studies which can show the causes, whether they can be modified or not, which are behind the differences in technical and economic efficiency in water use. Furthermore, we have compared productivity in the cost of water; we have also determined the employment generated by irrigation agriculture in different areas. Adapted from the source document.
