Summary: | The Japanese system of expressions of respect (keigo) is outlined & its three basic address forms, respect, modesty, & politeness, are characterized. Studies of keigo by Japanese & non-Japanese scholars are surveyed from a historical perspective & the linguistic, pragmatic, ethnographic, & sociolinguistic aspects of these investigations are discussed. The use of Japanese address forms is examined in Shusaky Endo's story "Taihenda!" ([Danger!], no bibliographic information provided) in which the many forms of dialogues & interpersonal interactions provide evidence of how keigo is used in concrete situations. 19 References. Z.
