Summary:A two-month sojourn in England & the unavailability of P. Byrne's & B. Long's Doctors Talking to the Patients. A Study of the Verbal Behaviour of Doctors in the Consultation (London, 1976) in West German libraries prompted a discussion of studies in conversation analysis & doctor-patient communication currently underway in the UK with special attention to three areas: (1) institutional & situation-conditioned communication; (2) the ethnic, social, age-related factors affecting doctor-patient communication; & (3) specific interaction phenomena in interpersonal communication (teasing, stereotyping). The survey focuses on areas of possible cooperation & research contacts between UK & West German researchers & research techniques that could be adopted to studies conducted in West Germany. The practical relevance of the analyses & studies surveyed is stressed. Z. Dubiel
