Summary:Examines salience, importance, and multidimensional aspects of spontaneous social identities, in an ethnically diverse sample of American undergraduates. Results show pattern differences among 3 groups of highly salient social identities: gender, religion, and ethnicity; academic major and student; and hobbies and athletics. Mainstream Americans attributed less importance to the gender and ethnic identities in comparison with Asians and Hispanics. (Abstract amended)
