Summary:Metastable Lu(x)FeO(3) polycrystals (0.65 < x < 1.35) have been synthesized by containerless processing. Synchrotron-radiation powder diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscope observation have shown them to be in three metastable phases. The crystal structure of one of these phases was assigned to a polar space group P63 cm with the composition of LuFeO(3), which has a similar structure as that of hexagonal YMnO(3). A characteristic dielectric relaxation with strong frequency dispersion of the hexagonal LuFeO(3) was observed above room temperature.
