Summary: | Skoda discusses the 14th century, which was a period of great upheaval in the UK. Profound change seems often to bring a wave of nostalgia, and so it was in the 14th century. This certainly was a period of deep and cataclysmic change. This was as true globally as it was in France and England. Social, economic and political structures were thrown into disarray by the advent of bubonic plague in 1348. The sheer scale of human suffering and mortality was as unimaginable for contemporaries as it is for us now; it is estimated that up to 50 per cent of the population died. The disease became endemic, bringing regular peaks of mortality. |
