Summary: | High operating costs remained a significant challenge for raw material producers in 2005. While companies strove to streamline their operations, some of these costs were passed on to customers in the form of higher prices. The industry is also facing a shifting supply dynamic: with a growing economy, Asian countries such as China and Vietnam have begun to limit their exports in order to meet their own internal demand. In the longer term, this situation could help provide new opportunities for raw material producers in other regions. Some of the recent trends in a few specific materials consumed in the ceramic, glass and related industries are examined. These materials include: abrasives; bauxite and alumina; boron; clays; feldspar and nepheline syenite; silica; and zirconium. Figures for production, consumption, and imports/exports are given. |
