Summary: | The US whitewares market is surveyed. This sector has shrunk over the past decade, with many plants closing as production shifts to low-cost manufacturing regions such as China and Mexico. However, there are some bright spots, particularly in ceramic tile, where several new US plants have come on-line in recent years. Despite the housing slowdown, the trend to make bathrooms larger and more luxurious has benefited both the ceramic tile and sanitaryware markets. American Standard and Villeroy & Boch have seen sales grow in some sectors. Dinnerware and pottery manufacturers such as Lenox Group and Lifetime Brands Inc. continue to face pricing pressures and steep competition from low-cost producers, as well as changing consumer tastes. 5 refs. |
