Summary:The ratio of silicate and sulfide nickel forms in storage tailings of Cu-Ni ores after 30-35 years of storage was determined using direct and indirect methods and compared with correspondent tailings of current production. It is shown that upon storage proceeds not only oxidation of sulfides and withdrawing of water-soluble sulfates but as well interaction of the latter with the silicate substrate. The higher the material dispersity and the higher the content of chemically active serpentines and hydrochlorites, the more is probability of nickel transition to silicate form. Nickel migration in a sulfate form and its precipitation by chemically active silicates leads to disorder of its distribution in coarse and fine classes characteristic for tailings of current Cu-Ni ore processing.
