Summary:We present a dynamic simulation of a wire rope involving both contact phenomena with a winch drum and hydraulic dynamics using a finite element method. Rapid winch operation often causes a disorderly winding of wire rope. which is important on quality of wire rope. Dynamic simulation is, therefore, required for a design of hydraulic winch system on the construction machinery. The wire rope is modeled using by truss elements considering large displacement motion. The contact between the wire rope and a winch drum is modeled using by variable length truss elements and bilinear spring elements. Simulation results show that some lever operation cause the rope looseness and intense pressure fluctuation. Moreover, we propose a slowstop winch system and verify the system performance by the simulation. 2 ) Nishinari, K., Discrete Modeling of a String and Analysis of a Loop Soliton, J. Appl.
