Summary: | Rockwell C indentations are used to quantify the interfacial fracture toughness between a metallic TiAl6V4 substrate and a ceramic ZrO sub 2 - 7%Y sub 2 O sub 3 coating obtained by low-pressure plasma spraying. The strain energy in the film can be determined from a finite element calculation of the indentation if the elasto-plastic properties of the substrate, the Young's modulus and the residual stress in the coating are known. The necessary materials parameters have been measured by tensile testing and nanoindentation. The validity of the test results with respect to materials parameter, residual stress and coating thickness, were investigated and the corresponding interfacial fracture toughness have been determined. |
