Summary:The question of whether the Friedel-Anderson model gives a good account of the d bands of transition metals when they are dilute in magnesium and aluminium alloys has been investigated theoretically. The electronic structure of several alloys has been calculated by the linear muffin tin orbital method nLMTO) within the atomic spheres approximation. The calculations give a good account of the experimental data and provide a tool for investigating the factors that influence the d-band width. It is concluded that the Friedel-Anderson model describes the bands only qualitatively.
