Nd-doped beta/alpha-SiAlON composites and the instability of internal alpha-prime(Nd) phase at high temperature

Summary: | Nd-doped beta/alpha-SiAlON composites with Si3N4-AlN-Nd2O3 composition and the behavior of its internal alpha-prime (Nd) phase were studied at high temperature, adding extra AlN to a constant ratio composition to understand the role of AlN in the densification of the material. It was found that only a little AlN definitely raised the sinterability of Si3N4/Nd2O3 composition, and caused the formation of alpha(Nd)-SiAlON. Fully dense beta /alpha(Nd)-SiAlON composite with superior mechanical properties were obtained by hot pressing. These composites have a fine microstructure, with elongated rod-shaped grains of beta-SiAlON combining with the fine grains of alpha(ND)-SiAlON. (AIAA) |
