Summary:The phase diagram Al2O3-AlN-MgO was investigated at 1750 and 1400 C. At 1750 C the homogeneity of the spinel-type phase magnesium aluminium oxynitride (MgAlON) extends from the Al2O3-MgO system to the Al2O3-AlN system. At 1400 C the homogeneity region of MgAlON extends from the Al2O3-MgO system towards AlON and AlN, but does not reach the Al2O3-AlN system. About 25 mol% of MgO had to be added to AlON to stabilise it at 1400 C, and it is therefore proposed that the properties of the stabilised material will be nearer to those of MgAl2O4 than to those of AlON. 8 refs.
