Summary: | Incorporation of Mo into passive layers on the steel was confirmed by AES and XPS surface analysis. Acid stability and pitting resistance were studied by means of corrosion tests and Mo-modified layers were compared to passive films formed without Mo. The presence of Mo increases the pitting potential in neutral and acidified 0.5 M salt solutions. The effect of redox and polymerization reactions of molybdate in acid media on pitting is discussed.
