Summary:Measurements of the ac susceptibility, magnetization, resistivity and specific heat of the intermetallic Laves phase compound TmNi sub 2 are reported. The specific heat of LuNi sub 2 is measured separately from 1.7-100K, enabling an analysis of the magnetic specific heat of TmNi sub 2 over the temperature range 45 mK-100K. This material shows a ferromagnetic transition temperature of 1.1K and a crystal field singlet ground state. Several sets of Hamiltonian parameters are discussed, taking into account the recently reported distortion from cubic symmetry in TmNi sub 2 . Graphs. 19 ref.--AA
