Summary:The machinability of tempered and non-tempered oil well ERW steel pipes was studied with reference to threading and the width of wear of the cutting tool was taken as a measure of machinability. Although the width of tool wear varies depending on the chemical composition, the strength and microstructure (heat treatment condition) of steel, the most influential factor is the alumina content. The presence of electric resistance welded joints has no substantial effect on the machinability. 1 ref.--P.T.V.
