Summary:What does that mean to me? After all, I reside in Michigan and it shouldn't affect me. I am a Mexican American woman who is fully aware of my culture, my history, and myself. I know of Mexican and Hispanic contributions to my country and the world. I know that our history is magnificent, our people passionate and tenacious. Yet every time that I hear and see the perceptions that others have of us, I cringe. Despite the insensitive remarks, I move forward step by step and correct them without allowing myself to become embittered toward non-Hispanics. Let's try to make a difference on a daily basis. All of us can volunteer to mentor a teen or child, work closely with our comadres instead of against them, rid ourselves of that ni modo attitude, and embrace the querer es poder that my abuelita Conchita Perea left me. This is what we must do. Only when we work together will the Pete Wilsons of the world cease to be the biting sandy wind in our eyes, the stones in our shoes, and the buzzard in the sky of this desert that we are crossing.
