Summary: | North American readers may also be surprised by the image of [Menno Simons] presented in this book. The first section traces his steps--the distances he travelled boggle the ming. Menno is defined against the upheavals of the time, particularly the unsavoury Anabaptist experiments in Munster and Amsterdam, chapters often expunged in North American versions. The second section is a fascinating collection of the many representations of Menno through the ages. The irony of this extensive "iconography" of Menno can hardly be lost on Mennonite readers. Menno, far from being the isolated leader of a minority sect, continually appears alongside Luther and Calvin (and shares their "bad press"). Less than a century after our beginnings, says the preface, Mennonites in the young Dutch Republic "rose out of the dark swamps of death and oppression to the shining summits of peace and prosperity." |
