Summary:It is important to begin warehouse space planning with a concentrated analysis of psat sales. Given the stock keeping unit (SKU) quantity requirements, the characteristics of each SKU type should be documented. These characteristics include: package type, sizes, weights, families or categories, SKU integrity, flammability and hazardous material considerations. An Order Picking System which represents the best potential for control methods and productivity-utilization must be identified next. The final step before actual space planning and optimization is the determination of SKU storage philosophy. To address the problem of wasted space, a customized computer spread sheet model was constructed. This space planning model allowed for multiple iterations of space utilization calculations, for either carton orientation, for a series of material zone depths. Additional analysis of SKU families using the planning model led to significant differences in optimum storage zone depth.
