Summary:A crucial starting question was what vulnerability means in pregnancy. Because the literature is inconclusive, we asked experts in the field about the concept of vulnerability in pregnancy and the operational possibilities of using a detection tool by midwives. According to some, it refers to the exclusion from social institutions (see, e.g., Vettenburg 1989), while others point to a precarious balance between risk factors and resources (see, e.g., De Groot et al. 2016). (Poverty Organization, interview 2) Although vulnerability cannot always be traced back to financial poverty, several interviewees indicated that the lack of financial resources remains a major obstacle in the access to health care. (Focus group midwives, midwife 3) In addition, the absence of a supportive social network and the associated absence of a "frame of reference" on maternity is referred to as a risk factor.
