Summary:The spectroscopic and lasing properties of lanthanum neodymium magnesium hexa-aluminate crystals are investigated. Continuous lasing is obtained at a wavelength of 1.0547 microns. A comparison of the lasing parameters of La(0.8)Nd(0.2)MgAl11O19 and LiNdP4O12 crystals under equivalent experimental conditions reveals that hexa-aluminate has a certain advantage. In particular, the threshold pump energies are, respectively, 0.28 and 0.35 mW. In addition, the efficiency of conversion of the pump energy to laser radiation is slightly higher for hexa-aluminate. The results suggest that La(1-x)Nd(x)MgAl11O19 crystals hold promise for use in optically pumped solid-state lasers.
