Inhibition of Carburization by Gold Films

A film of electrodeposited Au 0.009 mm thick completely protected mild steel samples from C enrichment after pack carburisation for 10 h at 910 deg C. The low diffusivity of C into Au is discussed in terms of the of filling of the 3d shell of the Au lattice. --J.C.C
