Summary: | Everything here is listed as a world premiere recording, which may well prove the case unless some LP label with poor distribution or historical 78s show up to indicate otherwise. Throughout his career the composer made a not infrequent point of obscuring key relationships, but rarely more than Ravel, and usually to either highlight a playful expressiveness (as in the second of 1955's 11 Interludes), or for exoticism's sake ("The Kibbutz" and "Yemenite Cradle Song" movements of Visit to Israel from 1958), or to reinforce the tonic at an important moment- a new theme, thematic return, imitative entries, a canon, etc. The aforementioned Fourth Mood, for instance, receives a performance overflowing with visceral energy, while the concluding "Popular Dance (Hora)" of the Visit to Israel cycle has vigor and emphasis to spare. |
