Summary:On the subject of scaling up was Windows 2000 Datacenter Server, which is expected out this summer. A high-end operating system intended for enterprises which have heavy network traffic, this 32way OS with 64 GB of memory will be accompanied by an OEM certification program to ensure reliability. Noting that as much as 43 per cent of system failures on Windows NT were caused by device drivers and other peripheral software components, rather than the OS kernel, Microsoft has developed a hardware compatibility list (HCL) for OEMs. To get on the list, OEMs must undergo testing of all components, drivers and software which work on the kernel level. "This is a different thing than Microsoft has ever done," said Greg Rankich, product manager for the Windows 2000 Enterprise Server Team. "The program means more than the product."
