Summary:Nonprofit organizations in a major metropolitan area were surveyed about nonprofit compensation. As might be expected, the income of employees in the nonprofit sector is directly related to length of applicable experience. The average annual pay of an employee with 30 or more years of experience is $39,000 - 2/3 higher than that of an employee with 10 or less years of experience ($23,250). The level of judgment required in the position also is a good predictor of compensation in the nonprofit sector. Annual pay varies a great deal depending on the type of nonprofit organization. The most surprising finding in the survey is that traditional organizational performance measures are not always good predictors of employee compensation.
