Summary:An artificial viscous boundary is introduced into a model to perform a finite element analysis for three-dimensional soil-structure interaction. The applicability of the viscous boundary to three-dimensional nonlinear problems and to simplifying coding in computer programs compensates for its limitation in absorbing energy. In this study, the viscous boundary for a full three-dimensional interaction system was derived by virtual work and the effectiveness of the boundary is examined in detail.
