Summary: | REIZENSTEIN Cello Concerto in G. GOLDSCHMIDT Cello Concerto Raphael Wallfisch (vc); Nicholas Milton, cond; Konzerthaus О Berlin CPO 555 109-2 (56:06) Here we have another triumph in Wallfisch and Milton's series of cello concertos by displaced Jewish composers. Franz Reizenstein (1911-1968) is a more obscure voice, and for years was known to record buyers solely for his hilarious pastiche Concerto Popolare, played and recorded in the first Gerard Hoffnung concert of 1956, and "Let's Fake an Opera, Or The Tales of Hoffnung" from the second concert of 1958. The concerto concludes with a glittering tarantella, left over from a now lost cello sonata written for Emanuel Feuermann: It is a sharp-edged piece, ironic in a way that recalls Goldschmidt's contemporary Kurt Weill. |
