Summary: | The reproductive and feeding biology of Astyanax alburnus were studied at canal Cornelios, Capao da Canoa, Rio Grande do Sul. The specimens were collected bimonthly from July 1995 to June 1996 by a seine net 15 m long, 3 m high and with 5 mm of mesh size. The reproductive period of A. alburnus begins on August, ending on February, with greater activity on November and January. The sex ratio was 0,77 female for each male. The feeding preferences were observed by mean of numerical occurrence. A. alburnus feed on a large variety of feeding items. Cladocera (25,65%), fish eggs (25,06%), adult insects (19,29%) and copepods (13,41%) were the most frequent items. As secondary items, we report algae (4,94%), larva of Insects (2,47%), scales (0,59%), shrimps (0,35%), amphipods (0,24%) and spiders (0,24%). |
