Summary: | Through careful design of a drag force device, composed of eight separate strain gauges, the Authors have accomplished direct measurement of the vegetative drag forces on willows at prototype scale. They are to be complimented on this approach which identified the need to characterise the vegetative roughness on physically based principles. Along with the Authors' experiments, direct drag force measurements on willows have been reported previously by Oplatka (1998) and Freeman et al. (2000). The purpose of this discussion is to present the Authors'results in the same context and discuss standard definitions which will allow direct comparison of vegetative drag data. |
