Summary:Glycoprotein 90K/MAC-2BP is a member of the scavengerreceptor cystein-rich protein superfamily, whichis thought to be involved in immune surveillance, defendingthe body against pathogens and cancer.90K serum levels are elevated in patients with cancerof various origins and in viral infections, such ashuman immunodeficiency virus and hepatitis C virus(HCV). Because in patients with HCV-related cirrhosisthe incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) ishigh, in the present paper we examined, by means ofan enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, the 90Kserum levels in 103 patients with liver cirrhosis, and in69 with HCC, and compared them to I--fetoprotein, thereference tumor marker for this neoplasm.Serum levels of 90K (cut-off 14 I14g/ml) were elevatedboth in cirrhosis (39%) and HCC (46%) comparedto controls (14.1 I14g/ml vs. 10.6 I14g/ml in cirrhosis, and14.8 I14g/ml vs. 9.1 I14g/ml in HCC, paO0.001). There was asignificant association with the presence of anti-HCVantibodies. 90K was found to be a non-specific tumormarker which is complementary to I--fetoprotein onthe basis of its probable different biological significance. In fact, 74% of HCC patients had at least onepositive marker. Combined use of 90K and I--fetoproteincould improve the sensitivity of a single test in thediagnosis of HCC.
