Summary:In this paper the discontinuous Galerkin method is presented, which can be used for the numerical approximation of the solution of partial differential equations arising in the atmospheric modeling. An overview of this recent approach is presented comparing it with other numerical methods, especially with finite element techniques. The implementation of the appropriate numerical procedure is discussed for a diffusion operator of second order in details, which includes also the case of the advection operator.
