Summary:Industrial architecture and photography have been intimately linked since the establishment of the latter medium; Virtually every large-scale engineering project under construction since the 1850s has been photographed and later also used for advertising and public relations. However, factory buildings and industrial plants must be strictly distinguished from engineering structures; While the latter were celebrated with images all the time and everywhere, the former are more rare to find, mostly scattered in company archives. The following article provides a short history of the relationship between construction and image, as well as a typology of the representations of factory buildings. [Abridged Publication Abstract]
