Summary:This country report offers a review of the state of Mediterranean coastal lagoons in Spain. In addition, lagoons located on the South Atlantic coast but with an obvious Mediterranean climatic influence, are included. General information is provided about the lagoons physical and biological characteristics, and on the human activities carried out in them. All Mediterranean coastal lagoons in Spain are wetlands listed as Ramsar sites. The legal framework, ownership and management of Spanish coastal lagoons are discussed and the main environmental issues are identified. The contribution of lagoon capture fisheries to fish production on the Spanish Mediterranean coast is minimal, as the presence of fisheries and aquaculture activities in coastal lagoons is generally poor, except in South-Atlantic lagoons with Mediterranean influence, where the linkage to aquaculture improves their sustainability.
