Summary:The aim of this study is to analyze the production of articles on sedentary behaviors in the elderly. This is a systematic review from the Pubmed database. The descriptors used were sedentary behavior and sitting time combined with elderly, older and aging. The authors included original articles available until December 2013, to submit measure of sedentary behavior. They considered the type of survey and design, instruments, operational definition and cutoff for sedentary behavior. The initial electronic searches resulted in 559 manuscripts, and of these 130 were excluded for duplication, resulting in 429 manuscripts. The process of analysis of the studies involved reading titles, abstracts and full texts. After all these phases, 39 manuscripts met the inclusion criteria of the review. The articles were published between 2003 and 2013. Accelerometer and questionnaire were instruments more pronounced for the measurement of sedentary behavior in the analyzed articles. They suggest further studies related to this theme in order to reduce the gaps.
