Summary:The environmental social responsibility within organizations encompasses aspects concerning its relationship both with the natural environment and with stakeholders. Adopting practices that conceive them as an organizational policy is a necessity far beyond a regulatory agencies' requirement, once several studies have demonstrated its association with a greater organizational effectiveness. Due to its complexity, an appropriate instrument is required to measure it. The aim in this study was to develop a measure that shows the congruence between social and environmental practices adopted by organizations and their endorsement by the workers. This research was conducted in two stages. The first one, a qualitative study, was performed from the answers offered by nine managers, aiming to investigate the meaning assigned by them to the phenomenon. The results supported the instrument development. In the second stage, the measure validity's evidence was checked, based on the answers provided by 299 employees from different organizations. The exploratory factor analysis and internal consistency results revealed satisfactory psychometric properties for the measure, composed of 29 items organized in two similar factors for both scales: frequency of environmental practices and importance attributed to them by workers. Despite the promising results, further studies are needed in order to attest to the measure's stability, as well as its predictive power.
