Summary:On March 5, 2000, the state ranger of the Marine Reserve of the Institute of Marine Biology N.V. Rulev found a dead, 8-m-long whale while working around the coast two kilometers from Cape Fal'shivyi Island. The administration of the Institute of Marine Biology decided to determine the whale species and to save its skeleton for the institute museum. On March 8, whale specialists of the institute and staff members of the reserve departed from Vladivostok to the site of the discovery. The beached whale was identified as a female minke whale Balaenoptera acutorostrata from the family Balaenopteridae. This species often occurs in the water of the marine reserve, but the last dead whale to be found was discovered on Bolshoi Pelis Island in 1978.
