Catalogue to an exhibition of the video performance One Day in Y's Life by the Japanese artist Yukako Ando (b.1972), and paintings, drawings, and documents by the British artist Lucy Harvey (b.1967). There are two booklets and one folded sheet. The author outlines the aims of the Peter Mertes Stipendium, and explains why the award for the year 2000 went to Ando and Harvey. He discusses their respective exploration in differing media of the theme of individual identity linking with experience of the world, highlighting Ando's humorous treatment of issues of personal vulnerability and cultural homogenization, and Harvey's concern for the trivialization of the spiritual dimension to human life amid increasing consumerist pressures. He explains how the artists adopt contrasting yet complementary strategies to address these issues as well as the theme of the passage of time, and concludes by commenting on the work of the patrons and jury in adjudicating the scholarship.
