Summary:The annexation of Cameroon by France and the reintegration of Alsace into the French national territory were accompanied by a particularly active policy to substitute the French language for the German language. Schools played an important role in this dual process, a role hitherto little studied from this perspective. We engage here in a comparison between two seemingly unrelated projects which nevertheless betray a common desire to oust the German presence and language.
