Summary:The building of competitive alternatives in an area like Xochimilco, for the cultivation of organic products, is analyzed in this article through the example of a small microenterprise. This enterprise's experience makes sense when both the new interactions between the city and the rural areas, and the support offered by the new directions in agriculture and environmental policies, are considered. On the other hand, the enterprise has the social capital which gives it its innovating and enterprising impulse and which enables it to be engaged in networks that have helped it to grow and to find new opportunities within the organic foods market and to share this market with other producers in the area.
