Summary:The author examines the profound influence that Nietzsche's works had on the origin and development of De Chirico's metaphysical painting. From the two major works by the German philosopher, "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" and "Ecce Homo," the Italian master absorbed many fundamental points of view that would form the core of his poetic imagination. His identification with Nietzsche was such that even for his own self-portrait, De Chirico took inspiration from a photographic image of the philosopher. The essay offers a comparison of the innovative works and writings of De Chirico with Nietzsche's famous texts, and highlights the magnitude and reciprocity of many recurring themes in the poetry of both: the themes of time, of prophecy, of shadows, the presence of night and day, the figure of Ariadne, and of perspective.
