Summary:For several centuries during the Bronze Age and Iron Age, Assur served as the capital of the Assyrian capital. During the Parthian period (second century BC-third century AD), the city again held an importance place as a cultural center. Excavations at the site during the early 20th century yielded numerous important archaeological finds, many of which have found their way into Europe's most significant museums.
