Summary:All was eventually made clear: he was an amnesiac scientist from the future called Sam Beckett whose time travel experiment had cocked up, causing him to swap places with a test pilot from the 50s. Needless to say, despite not having a pilot's license, Sam succeeded in averting his host's obliteration during a test flight with the help of Stockwell's character Al, a holographic projection of Sam's friend from the future that only Sam could see and hear.
