Trihalomethanes (THMs) formation in multi-stage flash (MSF) distillation plants

The presence of trihalomethanes in distillate produced by multi-stage flash (MSF) distillation plant is monitored. The study covers the four THMs compounds; namely, chloroform (CHCl sub(3)), bromodichloromethane (CHCl sub(2)Br), dibromochloromethane (CHClBr sub(2)) and bromoform (CHBr sub(3)). The c...

Summary:The presence of trihalomethanes in distillate produced by multi-stage flash (MSF) distillation plant is monitored. The study covers the four THMs compounds; namely, chloroform (CHCl sub(3)), bromodichloromethane (CHCl sub(2)Br), dibromochloromethane (CHClBr sub(2)) and bromoform (CHBr sub(3)). The concentrations of THMs compounds in process streams like chlorinated seawater, make-up, recirculating brine and blow-down in addition to distillate are determined. These levels are correlated with parameters such as streams temperature, pH and residual chlorine.
